Teams That Made Their Mark at the Copa America
If you missed out on the Copa America earlier this year, now is a great time to catch up on the action. This week, FOX Sports is bringing in two new analysts to its Women’s Copa America broadcast team: Lori Lindsey and Kyndra de St. Aubin. Lindsey made her network debut last week on the FS1 broadcast of LAFC vs. FC Dallas. Lindsey is a former USWNT player who helped the USWNT win the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup(tm) in Germany and the 2012 Olympic Gold in London. In addition to Lindsey, Kyndra de St. Aubin also returns to FOX Sports, where she was an integral part of the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup broadcast teams. Since 2017, she has been the lead color analyst
U.S. Women
The U.S. Women made their mark at Copa America in a variety of ways. Morgan earned her 116th and 117th international goals. She also recorded her 29th career multi-goal game. Morgan has now scored in five of her last six Concacaf Qualifying matches, extending her streak to five games. In addition, Andi Sullivan recorded her first international goal in her first qualifier, giving her 21 career assists.
In Mexico, the U.S. Women’s National Team kicked off the Concacaf Women’s Championship with a 3-0 win over Haiti. Alex Morgan scored twice before halftime and Midge Purce scored late in the second half. The win marked a big step for the team’s quest to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games and the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
In the opening half, Haiti threatened in the seventh minute with a free kick from 30 yards. But U.S. goalkeeper Casey Murphy came off her line to save it.
U.S. Under-20 Men
The U.S. Under-20 Men made their mark at Copa America, advancing to the quarterfinals on Thursday. They made six changes to their starting XI from the semifinal win over Honduras, and their depth was evident. They started the game on the front foot and maintained that momentum through 90 minutes.
This was their first appearance at Copa America, and they showed their potential to make a lasting impression on the tournament. They beat the Dominican Republic 6-0 in the 2022 Concacaf U-20 Championship Final and clinched their berth to the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup and 2024 Olympics. The team scored three goals in each half and posted its sixth shutout.
The U.S. Under-20 Men made their mark at Copa America, which was held in the United States in June. It was the first time a non-CONMEBOL nation had hosted the tournament. This is a sign of the growing importance of soccer in the region.
Canada
Canada made its mark at Copa America in the recent tournament in Peru. The U-20 MNT reached the quarterfinals, defeating Uruguay, Brazil, and Poland. The U-17 MNT qualified for the tournament through a tough group in South Korea, where it was eliminated by Germany in the Round of 16.
Copa America is the continent’s top men’s football tournament. It was previously known as the South American Football Championship, and it is the oldest continental competition. It determines the champions of South America, though teams from North America are also invited. Canada was the only non-CONMEBOL team to qualify for the tournament.
The Copa America was first played in 1916, as the South American Championship. In 1975, it was renamed to its current name. The tournament is held every four years and features 10 CONMEBOL member nations and two invited guest nations. In 2011, Argentina hosted the Copa.
